Knowing a suffix name does not yet give you a word you can use. Practise a small set of complete forms with precise meanings and a short sentence for each.

The idea

Put a meaning cue on the front of a card and one complete Turkish form on the back. For “in my bag”, recall çantamda before looking; then use Anahtarım bugün çantamda. Check the whole word against the model. Next change just one meaning: “my bag” gives çantam. Keep the pair together, but test each cue separately. Use the linked suffix pages when you need to understand a change.

Examples

  • Anahtarım bugün çantamda. My key is in my bag today.
  • Defterlerimiz bugün masada. Our notebooks are on the table today.
  • Kitabımı şimdi okuyorum.I am reading my book now.
  • çantammy bag
  • çantamdain my bag
  • defterlerimizour notebooks
  • kitabımmy book
  • kitabımımy book (as the specific object)

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not label every card simply “bag”. That cue cannot distinguish çanta, çantam and çantamda. Nor is a memorised ending a piece to paste onto every noun unchanged: store the spelling of the whole form.

Try it yourself

  1. Recall the whole form for “in my bag”: Anahtarım bugün ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    çantamda

çantamda: the key is inside a bag belonging to me. çantam expresses ownership but leaves out the location needed here.

  2. Recall one word meaning “our notebooks” (more than one notebook).

    Show answer or example answer

    defterlerimiz

defterlerimiz: the cue includes several notebooks and “our”. defterler loses the owner; defterimiz loses the plural.

  3. Complete “I am reading my book now”: ___ şimdi okuyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    kitabımı

kitabımı: the book belongs to me and is the specific thing I am reading. kitabım alone names “my book”; the object form here keeps the b and adds the final ı.

  4. Change “in my bag” to “my bag”. Write the whole word.

    Show answer or example answer

    çantam

çantam: this cue names my bag without saying where anything is. Keeping -da would add “in”, a meaning the cue no longer asks for.

Use it today

Make four cards from the examples. Hide the Turkish, recall each form from its exact meaning, then say a short sentence with it. Mark any missing meaning and try that card again later.
