Connect familiar nouns such as sevgi (love) and bilgi (knowledge) to their verb stems. Then keep the derived noun intact when adding plural, possessive or case endings.

The idea

This suffix forms established nouns from verb stems: sev- → sevgi, bil- → bilgi. It can name a feeling, a result or an object; learn each word’s meaning. The table gives all eight forms. The vowel follows four-way harmony; the initial consonant is k after ç f h k p s ş t, otherwise g. Compare bas- → baskı (pressure) and ör- → örgü (knitting). Add noun endings after derivation: bil-gi-ler-imiz.

Watch out

Do not treat this as a universal way to name an action: a form can obey harmony without being an established word. Learn bitki as “plant”, not simply “finishing”; its stem bit- means “grow” here. Keep its t: the suffix starts with a consonant, so there is no softening.

Try it yourself

  1. Build the noun meaning knowledge or information from bil- (know).

    Show answer or example answer

    bilgi

bilgi: bil- ends in voiced l and contains i, giving -gi. The whole noun means knowledge or information; it is not a verb tense.

  2. Build the noun meaning pressure from bas- (press).

    Show answer or example answer

    baskı

baskı: the final s requires k, while a selects dotless ı. The requested meaning is pressure, so write the complete noun, not just its ending.

  3. Build the noun meaning feeling from duy- (hear, feel).

    Show answer or example answer

    duygu

duygu: the rounded back vowel u stays rounded in the suffix, and voiced y allows g. This noun names a feeling, not just a sound that is heard.

  4. Join bit- + the noun-forming suffix + plural + locative: in the plants.

    Show answer or example answer

    bitkilerde

bitkilerde: first form the noun bitki, then add plural -ler and locative -de. The last vowel of the noun is i, so both later endings are front-vowel forms.
