Both patterns explain purpose, but they build different kinds of clauses.

The idea

Use um ... zu when the understood subject is the same. Damit introduces a finite clause and permits different subjects; it can also be used when the subjects are the same.

Watch out

After um, use zu with an infinitive: um ein Rad zu kaufen. With damit, give the clause a subject and conjugate its verb: damit du ein Rad kaufen kannst.

Try it yourself

  1. Ich übe, ___ sicherer zu sprechen. (um / damit)

    Show answer or example answer

    um

Answer: “um”. The intended subject is the same in both actions, so um ... zu expresses the purpose.

  2. Ich helfe dir, ___ du fertig wirst. (um / damit)

    Show answer or example answer

    damit

Answer: “damit”. The purpose clause has its own subject, so it needs damit and a finite verb.

  3. Sie spart, um ein Rad zu ___. (kauft / kaufen)

    Show answer or example answer

    kaufen

After zu, use the infinitive kaufen. Kauft is a conjugated form and cannot fill this position.
