Nasreddin Hoca is a figure of humorous oral storytelling. The two texts here are newly invented learning scenes featuring him, not traditional anecdotes or historical accounts. Read each ending, then return to the opening.

The idea

For these stories, compare the expectation with the result. Kısa konuşmak means speaking briefly, yet the chairman gives a long explanation. The sign promises a clean street, yet rubbish remains. The final reply makes that mismatch visible. Konuşmuş and yazmış present events in a retold story; these forms alone do not mean that someone is lying.

Watch out

Do not translate the last line only literally and stop there. Rubbish cannot read: inviting it to read mocks the idea that a sign can replace cleaning. Here fıkra means a short humorous tale; it does not guarantee that the events really happened.

Try it yourself

  1. In text 1, the chairman spoke briefly or at length? Choose: kısa / uzun.

    Show answer or example answer

    uzun

uzun: the explanation lasts half an hour. The chairman asks for brevity but does not practise it himself; that contradiction makes the note funny.

  2. In text 2, whom does Hodja invite to read? Choose: çöpleri / komşusunu.

    Show answer or example answer

    çöpleri

çöpleri: the invitation addresses the rubbish on the ground. Treating it as a reader exposes why a written claim cannot clean the street.

  3. In both texts, what fails to match the words? Choose: davranış / hava.

    Show answer or example answer

    davranış

davranış: speaking for half an hour and leaving rubbish on the ground contradict the words. The weather, hava, plays no part in either scene.

  4. What is the name for a short humorous tale here? Choose: fıkra / haber.

    Show answer or example answer

    fıkra

fıkra: the short scene builds towards a comic ending. Haber would mean a news report; these invented scenes make no claim to report real events.

Use it today

Retell one scene in three Turkish sentences. First state the expectation, then the result, and finally explain the joke with ama. Keep the label “invented teaching story” when sharing it.
