Vocabulary in longer Turkish sentences: B1 practice

The idea

First identify what the gap must describe: an event, a quality or an evaluation. Then connect it to the explanation, contrast or consequence elsewhere in the sentence. Yani introduces a reformulation; ama and yine de can overturn an expectation. Try the word in the complete sentence, including any negation. An option must fit the relationship between the clauses, not merely share their topic.

• Otobüs bugün zamanında geldi.The bus arrived on time today.
• Bu açıklama bana yeterli gelmedi.This explanation did not seem sufficient to me.
• Salon henüz hazır değildi; bu yüzden gösteri ertelendi ve seyirciler bir saat bekledi.The hall was not ready yet, so the show was postponed and the audience waited for an hour.
• Komşumuz Murat az konuşuyor ama yardıma ihtiyacımız olunca hemen geliyor; sessiz olması ilgisiz olduğu anlamına gelmiyor.Our neighbour Murat speaks little but comes straight away when we need help; being quiet does not mean being indifferent.
• Kutunun üzerindeki açıklama çok ayrıntılıydı, yine de parçaları birleştirmek için yeterli değildi.The explanation on the box was very detailed, but it still was not sufficient to put the parts together.

Watch out

Do not turn an association into evidence. Sessiz means quiet, whereas ilgisiz describes a lack of interest or concern: someone who says little may still help immediately. Likewise, a long explanation is not necessarily yeterli (sufficient). Use the stated behaviour or result, not your assumptions.

   ertelendi: the meeting will still take place, but on Monday instead of Friday, so it was postponed. Tamamlandı would mean it has already finished, contradicting the future date.

2. Choose the word supported by the whole sentence. Write only that word. Bu tarif oldukça ___; özel bir araç gerektirmiyor ve yemek on dakikada hazır oluyor. (karmaşık, pratik, pahalı, eksik)

   pratik

   pratik: no special tool is needed and the food is ready in ten minutes; both details support an easy, practical recipe. Pahalı concerns cost, which the sentence does not establish.

3. Choose the word supported by the whole sentence. Write only that word. Yeni komşumuz başta ___ görünüyordu ama birkaç sohbetten sonra bizi evine davet etti. (samimi, mesafeli, neşeli, cömert)

   mesafeli

   mesafeli: the initial impression of distance contrasts with the later invitation home. Samimi would describe warmth from the start and would not explain the contrast introduced by ama.

4. Choose the word supported by the whole sentence. Write only that word. Açıklama uzundu ama yalnızca cihazın renginden söz ediyordu; bu yüzden cihazı kullanmak için ___ değildi. (uzun, yeterli, yeni, pahalı)

   yeterli

   yeterli: information about colour does not explain how to use the device, so the explanation is not sufficient for that purpose. Uzun would give uzun değildi, contradicting the opening statement that it was long.

Use it today

For each gap, copy the clue and explain why it supports your choice. Reject one other option with a specific reason. Then change the clue so that the rejected word becomes a sensible answer.
