Amaç names what an action or project is intended to achieve. You will distinguish a purpose, reaching that purpose and explaining a project’s purpose, while keeping the owner visible.
The idea
With amaç, a vowel directly after the stem changes ç to c: amacı, amaca, amacım. A consonant leaves ç in place: amaçlar, amaçta, amaçtan. The table gives this noun’s case and possessive forms. In projenin amacı, the final -ı marks possession; as an object this becomes projenin amacını. With an action, yeniden kullanmak amacıyla means “with the aim of reusing”.
| Function | One purpose | Several purposes |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative / bare form | amaç | amaçlar |
| Accusative | amacı | amaçları |
| Dative | amaca | amaçlara |
| Locative | amaçta | amaçlarda |
| Ablative | amaçtan | amaçlardan |
| Genitive | amacın | amaçların |
| Possession: my | amacım | amaçlarım |
| Possession: your (singular) | amacın | amaçların |
| Possession: his / her / its | amacı | amaçları |

Watch out
Do not treat every amacı as an accusative. In Amacı açıkladık, it is the purpose we explained; in Projenin amacı açık, it means the project’s purpose. To explain that project’s purpose, keep the possessive ending and add the object marking: Projenin amacını açıkladık.
