You will add endings to oda, a word that ends in a vowel, and write odada and oda da correctly.
The idea
oda ends in the back vowel a, so endings follow -a/-ı harmony and an ending that starts with a vowel needs a buffer: dative odaya, accusative odayı, genitive odanın. Endings that start with a consonant attach directly: odalar, odada, odadan, odam, odamız. The third-person possessive after a vowel is -sı: odası, and with a case ending odasına.
| Stem | Ending | Form |
|---|---|---|
| oda | -lar | odalar |
| oda | -da | odada |
| oda | -dan | odadan |
| oda | -y + -a | odaya |
| oda | -y + -ı | odayı |
| oda | -nın | odanın |
| oda | -m | odam |
| oda | -mız | odamız |
| oda | -sı | odası |
| oda | -sı + -n + -a | odasına |
| oda | -lar + -ımız + -dan | odalarımızdan |
| oda | da (ayrı yazılır) | oda da |
Examples
- Kedi odada uyuyor. The cat is sleeping in the room.
- Yarın odayı boyuyoruz. We are painting the room tomorrow.Odayı is the accusative for a specific room: after the vowel a it needs the buffer y, so never odaı.
- Odam küçük ama güzel. My room is small but nice.
- Salon temiz, oda da temiz. The living room is clean, and the room is clean too. Here da is a separate word meaning 'also'. Joined to the noun, odada would mean 'in the room'.
- Annemin odası mavi.My mother's room is blue. The owner takes the genitive (annemin) and the room takes -sı after the vowel: odası. Compare ev, where -i does the same job: evi.
- odalarımızdanfrom our roomsodalar-ler / -lar: the plural suffixımız-imiz / -ımız / -umuz / -ümüz: ourdan-den / -dan / -ten / -tan: from, out of
- odasınato his or her roomodası-i / -si: his, her, itsnBuffer -n-: evinde, evinden, evinea-e / -a / -ye / -ya: to, towards
- odayato the roomodayBuffer -y-: the y that joins vowelsa-e / -a / -ye / -ya: to, towards

Watch out
Do not write oda da as one word or odada as two. Odada means 'in the room'; oda da is the separate word 'also', as in Salon temiz, oda da temiz. Written apart, da never turns into ta and follows the vowel of the word before it.
Try it yourself
Add the dative to oda: my mother is going into the room.
Show answer or example answer
odaya
odaya: oda ends in a vowel, so the dative takes the buffer y and the back-vowel shape -a; girmek needs this direction ending.
Add the accusative to oda: I cleaned the room yesterday.
Show answer or example answer
odayı
odayı: the room is a definite object, so it takes the accusative, and after the vowel a the buffer y comes before -ı.
Add the possessive to oda: this is my room.
Show answer or example answer
odam
odam: after a vowel the ending for 'my' is only -m; a vowel before it (odaım) is wrong.
Write the word for "also": the living room is big, the room is big too.
Show answer or example answer
da
da: the word means 'also' and is written apart; odada would mean 'in the room' and change the sentence.
