You will build the forms of okul, add endings to a word that ends in a consonant, and tell the two jobs of okulu apart.
The idea
okul ends in a consonant, so endings attach directly: there is no buffer letter and the l never softens. You get okullar, okulum, okula, okulda and okuldan. The last vowel u is back and rounded, which gives -lar, -um, -a, -da and -dan.
| Word | Ending | Form |
|---|---|---|
| okul | -lar | okullar |
| okul | -um | okulum |
| okul | -u | okulu |
| okul | -umuz | okulumuz |
| okul | -a | okula |
| okul | -da | okulda |
| okul | -dan | okuldan |
| okul | -u + -n + -dan | okulundan |
Examples
- Ablam okula gidiyor. My older sister goes to school.
- Sabah okul sekizde başlıyor.School starts at eight in the morning.
- Ali okuldan geliyor.Ali is coming from school.
- Okulu seviyorum.I like the school. Here -u marks a specific school as the object, with no owner in the sentence. The next example has the same letters but means his or her school.
- Onun okulu çok eski. His or her school is very old. Here -u is the possessive his or her. The word onun names the owner, and okulu is the subject, so it cannot be an object.

Watch out
The form okulu has two jobs: onun okulu is “his or her school”, while Okulu seviyorum is “I like the school”, with -u marking a particular school as the object. Without it, Okul seviyorum speaks about school in general. Also do not add a buffer as in arabaya: it is okula, not okulya.
Try it yourself
Add “my” to okul (school): my school.
Show answer or example answer
okulum
okulum: okul ends in a consonant, so the ending for “my” is the full -um, not just -m, and the back rounded u gives -um.
Add the right ending to okul (school): We are going to school.
Show answer or example answer
okula
okula: after a consonant the dative needs no buffer y, and the back vowel u gives -a.
Fill in okul (school) with the ending for his or her school.
Show answer or example answer
okulu
okulu: onun already names the owner, so the noun only needs the possessive -u; it is the subject, not an object.
Make “from his or her school” from okul (school).
Show answer or example answer
okulundan
okulundan: the possessive -u is followed by a buffer n, then -dan, because the stem still ends in a voiced sound.
