Havaalanı means airport. Although it is written as one word, it contains hava (air), alan (area) and the compound ending -ı. That structure matters when you describe a journey or talk about your local airport.

The idea

Keep the compound ending before a case and insert n: havaalanına, havaalanında, havaalanından, havaalanını. For the plural, put -lar before that ending: havaalanları. A personal possessive replaces the compound ending: havaalanım, havaalanımız. The n of alan does not soften; these forms use back vowels. “Our airport” can mean the airport serving our town, without implying ownership.

Watch out

Do not treat the final ı like the last vowel of kapı: kapıya but havaalanına, not havaalanıya. Likewise, the plural is havaalanları, not havaalanılar. Keep the two adjacent letters aa and the dotless ı in the base word.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the whole word: tomorrow we will go to the airport. Yarın ___ gideceğiz. (havaalanı)

    Show answer or example answer

    havaalanına

havaalanına: gideceğiz makes the airport the destination. The case comes after a compound ending, so the linking consonant is n; havaalanında would mean “at the airport”.

  2. Use the plural: these large airports are busy at night too. Bu büyük ___ geceleri de kalabalık oluyor. (havaalanı, çoğul)

    Show answer or example answer

    havaalanları

havaalanları: the prompt refers to several airports. The plural goes inside the compound, before its final ı; there is no number here that would keep the noun singular.

  3. Use the possessive: our airport is small but practical. Bizim ___ küçük ama kullanışlı. (havaalanı)

    Show answer or example answer

    havaalanımız

havaalanımız: bizim identifies the group associated with this one airport. Replace the compound -ı with -ımız; havaalanlarımız would refer to more than one airport.

  4. Complete the whole word: the bus left the airport. Otobüs ___ çıktı. (havaalanı)

    Show answer or example answer

    havaalanından

havaalanından: çıktı describes leaving the airport, so the noun marks the starting point. Keep the compound ı, then add n and -dan; no apostrophe is needed for this common noun.

Use it today

Describe an imaginary airport: say how you will go there, where someone is waiting and how you leave it. Add one sentence about “our airport” and one about several airports.
