You will use para, money, with the endings it needs most, and decide when it takes an ending and when it stays bare.

The idea

Para ends in the vowel a, so endings that begin with a vowel need a helper consonant: parayı, paraya, paranın. The possessives are short: param, paran, parası, paramız. Money is a mass noun: in general it stays bare and has no accusative (Para biriktiriyorum), while a particular sum that both speakers know takes it (Parayı masaya bıraktım).

  • Bugün hiç param yok.I have no money at all today.
  • Babam her ay para biriktiriyor. My father saves money every month. Here para is money in general, so it stays bare: no accusative and no helper y. Parayı biriktiriyor would point at one known sum.
  • Parayı masaya bıraktım.I left the money on the table.Parayı is para, a y that separates the two vowels, and the accusative ı, because both speakers know which money is meant.

Watch out

Do not put the accusative on money in general: Parayı biriktiriyorum points at one known sum, while Para biriktiriyorum means that you save money. And do not write the vowels side by side: paraa and paraı do not exist, a y comes between them, as in paraya and parayı.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the dative to para (money): to the money.

    Show answer or example answer

    paraya

paraya: the dative is -a after a back vowel, and y separates it from the final a of para.

  2. Write “my money”: add the ending for “my” to para (money).

    Show answer or example answer

    param

param: after a vowel, “my” is only -m, so para plus m, with no vowel of its own.

  3. Add the ending: I am counting the money. It is one known sum, so it is the object.

    Show answer or example answer

    parayı

parayı: the object is one known sum, so it takes the accusative; y separates the two vowels and the back vowel gives ı.

  4. Add the ending: he or she has a lot of money (literally, his or her money is a lot).

    Show answer or example answer

    parası

parası: after a vowel, “his or her” is -sı; the back vowel a gives ı.

Use it today

Write four sentences about money: how much you have, where it is, what you do with it in general and what you do with one particular sum. Underline the sentence in which para has no ending.
