You will build the plural, possessive and case forms of yer (place, floor) and meet the n that joins a possessive to a case ending.

The idea

Yer (place, ground, floor) has one syllable and a front vowel, so every ending is front: yerler, yerde, yere, yerden, yerim, yerimiz. The stem never changes. Yerde, yere and yerden often mean on, onto and off the ground: yere oturmak is to sit on the floor.

Examples

  • Bu yer çok güzel. This place is very beautiful.
  • Otobüste hiç yer yok. There is no room at all on the bus.
  • Kitabı yerine koydum.I put the book back in its place.Yerine is yer + -i (its) + -ne: after the possessive, the dative -e takes a joining n.
  • Yerde su var. There is water on the floor.
  • Çocuklar yere oturdu. The children sat on the floor.
  • Telefon yerinde değil.The phone is not in its place.
  • Bu yeri çok seviyorum.I like this place a lot.Bu yeri is a definite object, so yer takes the accusative -i. The same form also means 'its place', and the sentence decides.
  • Evin yeri çok güzel. The location of the house is very nice.In Evin yeri, the owner ev takes the genitive -in and yer takes the possessive -i, so yeri is not an object here.
  • yerimizdein our placeyerimiz-imiz / -ımız / -umuz / -ümüz: ourde-de / -da / -te / -ta: in, at, on
  • yerindenfrom its placeyeri-i / -si: his, her, itsnBuffer -n-: evinde, evinden, evineden-den / -dan / -ten / -tan: from, out of

Watch out

After the possessive -i (its place) a case ending starts with n: yerinde, yerine, yerinden, never yeride or yeriye. Also, yeri alone can be an object or 'its place': the sentence decides.

Try it yourself

  1. Add the locative to yer (ground): on the ground.

    Show answer or example answer

    yerde

yerde: the last vowel e is front and r is voiced, so the locative is -de; the word then means on the ground.

  2. Add the ending for 'my' to yer (place): my place.

    Show answer or example answer

    yerim

yerim: the possessive for 'my' after a consonant is -im, with the front vowel i, and the stem stays yer.

  3. Add 'its' and then the locative to yer (place): in its place.

    Show answer or example answer

    yerinde

yerinde: yer + -i (its) + n + -de; the n is added because a case ending follows the possessive.

  4. Add 'our' and then the ablative to yer (place): from our place.

    Show answer or example answer

    yerimizden

yerimizden: -imiz (our) comes before the case, and the ablative after a voiced z is -den.
