A repair can require time; a new task can require us to get up early. Use gerektirmek to connect a situation with the resource or action it makes necessary. The table uses third-person singular forms, as with bu iş (this job).

The idea

With gerektirmek, the situation is the subject and what it requires is the object: Bu iş sabır gerektirir. A general resource can appear without a case ending: sabır, ek çalışma. For an action with a named doer, use a verbal noun with a possessive ending and the accusative: erken kalkmamızı gerektiriyor means “requires us to get up early”. Here -mız identifies us, while -ı marks the action as the object. The stem is gerektir-; the aorist adds -ir, giving gerektirir.

Watch out

Do not swap gerektirmek and gerekmek without rebuilding the sentence. Bu iş sabır gerektiriyor makes the job the subject; Bu iş için sabır gerekiyor makes patience the needed thing. Likewise, kalkmamız gerekiyor has no final accusative -ı, unlike kalkmamızı gerektiriyor.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the affirmative aorist of gerektirmek: this pattern requires attention.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerektirir

gerektirir: the prompt asks for a general statement about the pattern, so use the aorist. Keep both occurrences of ir: one belongs to the stem and the other is the tense ending.

  2. Use the negative present form of gerektirmek: this small correction needs no extra fee.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerektirmiyor

gerektirmiyor: this correction has no extra charge. The negative present form expresses that absence; gerektirmez would be the negative aorist, not the requested tense.

  3. Complete with kalkmak: this task requires us to get up early.

    Show answer or example answer

    kalkmamızı

kalkmamızı: kalkma names getting up, -mız identifies us as the people who get up, and final -ı marks the whole action as the object of the requirement.

  4. Use gerekmek in the present: patience is needed for this job.

    Show answer or example answer

    gerekiyor

gerekiyor: patience is what is needed for the job. Using gerektiriyor here would leave the reader waiting to hear what patience itself requires.

Use it today

Describe a task you know: give one resource it requires and one it does not require. Add an action that it requires you and a partner to do, then express that need with gerekmek.
