Çözmek connects two familiar actions: untying something and finding the answer to a difficulty. At B2, choose the object and the verb form precisely, especially when describing what a method can achieve.
The idea
Use düğümü çözmek for untying the knot and sorunu çözmek for solving the problem. A specific object takes the accusative; an unspecified activity can appear as bulmaca çözmek. The stem çöz- stays unchanged: çözüyorum, çözdüm, but the aorist is çözerim. In çözeceğim, the future suffix’s k becomes ğ before the personal ending.
| Person | Present continuous | Aorist | Past | Future |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | çözüyorum | çözerim | çözdüm | çözeceğim |
| sen | çözüyorsun | çözersin | çözdün | çözeceksin |
| o | çözüyor | çözer | çözdü | çözecek |
| biz | çözüyoruz | çözeriz | çözdük | çözeceğiz |
| siz | çözüyorsunuz | çözersiniz | çözdünüz | çözeceksiniz |
| onlar | çözüyorlar | çözerler | çözdüler | çözecekler |

Watch out
Do not transfer the dative from soruna çözüm bulmak (find a solution to the problem) to sorunu çözmek. Also distinguish çözmeyiz (we do not solve) from çözemeyiz (we cannot solve): the second expresses inability, not just a negative action.
Try it yourself
Use the aorist of çözmek for ben: I solve a puzzle every evening.

çözerim
çözerim: her akşam makes this a repeated activity, and ben requires the first-person ending. This verb uses the aorist çözer, not çözür.
Use the future of çözmek for ben: tomorrow I will solve this riddle.

çözeceğim
çözeceğim: yarın and the instruction call for the future; the speaker is ben. The k in -ecek softens to ğ before -im.
Choose sorunu or soruna: we solved this problem together.
Show answer or example answer
sorunu
sorunu: this is the specific problem that was solved, so it is the direct object. Soruna would fit bir çözüm bulduk, where the solution is found for the problem.
Use the negative ability form of çözmek for biz: we cannot solve this problem without understanding its cause.
Show answer or example answer
çözemeyiz
çözemeyiz: lacking an understanding of the cause prevents a solution. The negative ability form with biz expresses that limit; çözmeyiz would only say that we do not solve it.
