Say that you cannot work today, mark an uncertain return date and ask which contact should receive your message. Hier spricht Deniz aus dem Lager. — This is Deniz from the warehouse.

The idea

Kann is the conjugated modal; arbeiten stays in the infinitive at the end: Ich kann heute nicht arbeiten. State today’s absence directly.

Use it in context

A clear message identifies the speaker, states the absence and separates known facts from estimates. Today is certain; tomorrow is only voraussichtlich. Ask about your workplace’s reporting route. Sobald ich mehr weiß, melde ich mich promises an update, not a definite return date.

Examples

  • Hier spricht Deniz aus dem Lager. This is Deniz from the warehouse.
  • Ich bin krank und kann heute nicht arbeiten.I am ill and cannot work today.
  • Voraussichtlich fehle ich auch morgen.I will probably be absent tomorrow as well.
  • Wen soll ich informieren?Whom should I inform?
  • Ich melde mich, sobald ich mehr weiß.I will get in touch as soon as I know more.
  • Bitte bestätigen Sie den Erhalt meiner Nachricht. Please confirm that my message arrived.

Watch out

Voraussichtlich marks an expectation, not a firm promise. Separate what you know about today from an estimate about tomorrow.
