Change a job, exchange money or swap seats: use wechseln and tauschen with clear objects, partners and replacement patterns.

The idea

Wechseln often replaces one thing or situation with another: den Job, die Kleidung, Geld wechseln. Tauschen highlights exchange: etwas gegen etwas tauschen or mit jemandem tauschen. Some contexts, including seats, overlap.

For cash, Geld wechseln is an established phrase; for collectibles, use eine Karte gegen eine andere tauschen. Wechsle and wechsele are both correct ich forms.
