分 counts minutes; 分間 explicitly marks a span of time.
The idea
Place a number before 分 or 分間: 一分間 is いっぷんかん and 三分 is さんぷん. Both can express duration, as in 三分勉強しました. The reading changes: 二分 is にふん, 六分 is ろっぷん and 何分 is なんぷん.

- 会議は三時十分に始まります。The meeting starts at three ten.

Watch out
分 also gives the minute on a clock: 三時十分 is 3:10, not a ten-minute duration. Use context; 間 makes the duration explicit.
