Use this pattern to say whether an event has happened at least once in someone’s experience.
The idea
Put the verb in its plain past た-form and add ことがある; あります is polite. Add か to ask, or use ことがありません for no experience.
| Verb | Experience |
|---|---|
Examples
I have been to Japan.
Have you ever eaten sushi?
I have never climbed Mount Fuji.
I have read that book twice.
My older sister has lived in Kyoto.
I have spoken Japanese with a teacher.

Watch out
The た-form belongs to the verb, even in a negative experience: 食べたことがありません, not 食べなかったことがあります. A dated event such as yesterday’s meal normally uses the simple past instead.
