Use hearsay そうです to pass on information from another source, rather than an impression based on appearance.
The idea
Attach そうです to a complete plain-form clause: 降る, 降らない, 安い, 静かだ or 休みだった. A source can be marked with によると or では; tense and negation belong in the reported clause.
| Polite form | Reported clause |
|---|---|
| 降ります | 降るそうです |
| 安いです | 安いそうです |
| 静かです | 静かだそうです |
| 休みでした | 休みだったそうです |
| 来ません | 来ないそうです |
Examples
- 天気予報では、明日は雨が降るそうです。According to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.
- 田中さんは来週、東京に行くそうです。I hear Tanaka is going to Tokyo next week.
- 山田さんは昨日、休みだったそうです。I hear Yamada had a day off yesterday.
- あの店は安いそうです。I hear that shop is inexpensive.
- この町は静かだそうです。I hear this town is quiet.
- 兄は今日来ないそうです。I hear my older brother is not coming today.

Watch out
Do not confuse 降るそうです (reported information) with 降りそうです (an imminent event inferred from evidence). For a noun or な-adjective in the affirmative, keep だ before hearsay そうです.
