A recording lets you hear a phrase as a listener would.

The idea

Choose one short model spoken in standard Japanese. Listen for the whole meaning, then replay it in small chunks. Record yourself saying the same phrase and alternate the two recordings; compare one feature at a time, such as vowel length, the pause for っ, or the ending.

Examples

  • もう少すこし、ゆっくり話はなしてください。Please speak a little more slowly.
  • もう一度いちど、言いってください。Please say it once more.
  • 会議かいぎは十時じゅうじに始はじまります。The meeting starts at ten.
  • 駅えきの前まえで待まっています。I will wait in front of the station.
  • 明日あした、予定よていを確認かくにんします。I will check the schedule tomorrow.
  • 質問しつもんがあれば、教おしえてください。Please tell me if you have any questions.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Japanese voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not judge only by speed or loudness: a long vowel and a small っ occupy time even in fluent speech. Speakers and devices may differ in pitch and pacing.

Try it yourself

  1. 「もう少すこし」の「もう」の長ながい母音ぼいんはどれですか。(お/い)

    Show answer or example answer

    お

お: もう contains a long o vowel; give it two morae rather than cutting it short.

  2. 「駅えきの前まえで待まっています」の「まって」にある小ちいさい文字もじはどれですか。(っ/つ)

    Show answer or example answer

    っ

っ: the small っ marks a pause before the following consonant in 待っています.

  3. 「質問しつもんがあれば、教おしえてください」の依頼いらいの終おわりを書かいてください。

    Show answer or example answer

    ください

ください: this ending makes 教えてください a polite request; keep it audible in the recording.

Use it today

Use the first example with a reliable recording or a teacher. Listen, record, compare the length of もう and the request ending, then record again and note one improvement.
