Use kelime for an individual word you learn, write or choose. You will follow that word through a sentence, distinguish a specific object from a possessive form, and combine plural and possession.

The idea

The stem kelime stays intact: kelimeler, kelimeyi, kelimeye, kelimede, kelimeden, kelimenin. Its final e gives front-vowel endings; no consonant softens. Compare kelimem (my word) with kelimesi (his/her word). In kelimelerimiz, the plural comes before “our”. To make kelimesi a direct object, add the case ending after a linking n: kelimesini.

Watch out

Do not swap kelimeyi and kelimesi: the first marks a specific word as the object, while the second says whose word it is. In kendi kelimesini seçiyor, keep both possession and the object ending. Bare kelimeyi would lose the possessive marking.

Try it yourself

  1. Fill the gap: I have seen this word before.

    Show answer or example answer

    kelimeyi

kelimeyi: bu singles out the word you saw, so the object takes the accusative. The y joins the final vowel to -i.

  2. Fill the gap: The meaning of this word is clear.

    Show answer or example answer

    kelimenin

kelimenin: the meaning belongs to this word. The genitive connects it to anlamı; the word itself is not a direct object here.

  3. Use the plural: Our new words are ready.

    Show answer or example answer

    kelimelerimiz

kelimelerimiz: several words belong to us. -ler supplies the plural and -imiz matches bizim; kelimemiz would name just one word.

  4. Fill the gap: In the game, everyone chooses their own word.

    Show answer or example answer

    kelimesini

kelimesini: each person chooses their own word. -si keeps that possessive link, and -ni marks the resulting noun as the object of seçiyor.
