Use sanat to discuss an artistic field or someone’s creative work. The table helps you move from art in general to a particular artist’s art without losing a possessive ending.
The idea
The stem sanat keeps its final t: sanatı, sanata, sanatım. In sanatta and sanattan, both the stem’s t and the suffix’s t are written. Compare sanatı as an object with onun sanatı (his/her art); when the latter becomes an object, it is onun sanatını. For art in general, use the singular; sanatlar can refer to branches of art, as in görsel sanatlar (visual arts).

Watch out
Do not read every sanatı as “his/her art”: in çağdaş sanatı desteklemek, it marks what is supported. Conversely, onun sanatını needs both possession and the object ending. Several individual artworks are sanat eserleri; sanatlar is not a general word for objects in a gallery.

Complete with sanat: this museum supports contemporary art.
Show answer or example answer
sanatı
sanatı: desteklemek takes an object; here that object is contemporary art. There is no possessor in this phrase, and the stem’s t stays unchanged.
Complete with sanat: we are not afraid to experiment in art.
Show answer or example answer
sanatta
sanatta: the blank names the field in which we experiment. It answers “where?”, so the locative is needed; the two adjacent t letters belong to the stem and the suffix.
Complete with sanat: we are interested in this painter’s art.
Show answer or example answer
sanatına
sanatına: bu ressamın establishes whose art it is, while ilgi duymak directs interest towards something. Start from sanatı, then add the linking n and dative -a.
Write “our arts” as one word, referring to several branches of art.
Show answer or example answer
sanatlarımız
sanatlarımız: several branches require the plural sanatlar, and “our” adds -ımız. The result refers to arts associated with us, not simply to several artworks.
