Words such as yazım (spelling), ölçüm (measurement) and sunum (presentation) name an activity or its result. Learn each noun with its meaning, then add ordinary noun endings.

The idea

Attach -ım after a consonant when the last vowel is a or ı, -im after e or i, -um after o or u, and -üm after ö or ü. A vowel-final stem takes -m: eyle- → eylem (action). In seçim and ölçüm, ç stays unchanged. The new noun comes before plural, possessive and case endings. This suffix forms established vocabulary; do not use it as a general replacement for -ma/-me with any verb.

Watch out

Do not read every final -im as “my”: seçim means choice or election; “my choice” is seçimim, with a second suffix. Context also matters: yazım can be the noun “spelling” or yazı + -m, “my text”.

Try it yourself

  1. Form the noun meaning “spelling” from yaz-.

    Show answer or example answer

    yazım

yazım: the clue asks for spelling, so start from the verb yaz-. Its a selects ı. Here the word is not yazı plus a possessive ending.

  2. Form the noun meaning “measurement” from ölç-.

    Show answer or example answer

    ölçüm

ölçüm: the rounded front vowel ö gives ü. The stem keeps its ç, so there is no change to c before this vowel.

  3. Build “presentation” from sun-, then add the ablative: “from the presentation”.

    sunumdan

sunumdan: the u in sun- gives -um. The resulting noun ends in voiced m, so the case ending begins with d; its back vowel gives -dan. No apostrophe is needed for this common noun.

  4. Build “choice” from seç-, then make it “my choice”.

    seçimim

seçimim: seç- becomes seçim, a choice. Only the final -im adds the owner, “my”; stopping at seçim would omit that information.

Use it today

Write one sentence about a presentation and one about a measurement. Split the derived nouns into parts, then change one of them to mean “my” and explain which suffix you added.
