A nature diary needs more than the word for animal. Learn fourteen names, from foxes and deer to birds and insects, then describe what you see and hear with a suitable verb.

The idea

Learn animal names with their usual actions: kurt uluyor means the wolf is howling, serçe ötüyor the sparrow is chirping, and arı vızıldıyor the bee is buzzing. These are useful pairings, not verbs reserved for one species. Uçmak describes flying; konmak describes a bird or insect landing or settling on something, as in çiçeğe kondu.

Watch out

For a mosquito, use the precise name sivrisinek, written as one word. Sinek commonly means a fly and can be used more broadly in conversation, but does not identify a mosquito precisely. Do not translate every small flying insect as sinek: a bee is arı, a butterfly is kelebek.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the animal that fits: Uzakta bir ___ uluyor. (kurt / kelebek)

    Show answer or example answer

    kurt

kurt: the clue is a long howl coming from a distance. Of the two options, a wolf can make that sound; a butterfly cannot.

  2. Choose the sound verb: Bahçedeki serçe ___. (ötüyor / uluyor)

    Show answer or example answer

    ötüyor

ötüyor: the subject is a sparrow, so the sentence describes chirping. Uluyor would describe howling and does not fit this bird.

  3. Write the precise Turkish word for a mosquito.

    Show answer or example answer

    sivrisinek

sivrisinek: the question asks specifically for a mosquito. The shorter sinek would lose that distinction; write the full name without a space.

  4. Choose what can land on a flower: Sarı çiçeğe bir ___ kondu. (kelebek / ayı)

    Show answer or example answer

    kelebek

kelebek: a butterfly can settle on a flower after flying. Ayı means bear, so it does not fit the action and the tiny landing place.

Use it today

Write four lines of an imaginary nature diary. Include a wild mammal, a bird and an insect. Say where each is and use two different sound verbs; check that the animal and action fit together.
