Build a short portrait of someone you know. The model introduces a university friend, selects a few visible details and shows her character through everyday behaviour. Read the examples together as parts of one description.

The idea

Organise the paragraph as introduction → appearance → character with evidence → personal impression. In Boyu uzun, height is the subject; in Uzun boylu biri, the whole phrase describes a person. Use saçı or saçları for her hair and huyu for her temperament. After a character word, add an action that makes it believable. Once the person is clear, you can continue without repeating the name in every sentence.

Read the text

Leyla, üniversiteden bir arkadaşım. Boyu uzun, saçı ise kısa ve kıvırcık. Leyla genellikle renkli gözlükler takar. Yumuşak bir huyu var; kolay kolay öfkelenmez. Arkadaşlarını her zaman dikkatle dinler. Leyla zor günlerde sakin kalır. Sabırlı biridir; aynı konuyu birkaç kez açıklamaktan sıkılmaz. Onun yanında kendimi rahat hissediyorum.

Watch out

Do not combine the two height patterns as Boyu uzun boylu. Choose Boyu uzun or Uzun boylu biri. Also, colourful glasses do not demonstrate patience: keep appearance and evidence of character separate when planning your paragraph.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the form describing a tall person.

    Show answer or example answer

    boylu

boylu: the sentence describes a person with biri. Uzun boy names height but cannot directly replace the adjective phrase here.

  2. Complete with “her hair”; singular and plural forms are accepted.

    Show answer or example answer

    saçı / saçları

saçı / saçları: both can refer to her hair as a whole. The possessive ending connects the hair to the person; the plural form does not mean several people own it here.

  3. Choose the behaviour that supports the claim that she is patient.

    Show answer or example answer

    aynı konuyu tekrar açıklar

aynı konuyu tekrar açıklar: explaining something again is evidence of patience. Wearing colourful glasses gives a visual detail, not support for that character trait.

  4. Replace the name with “her” without changing whose company you mean.

    Show answer or example answer

    Onun

Onun: this form preserves the link to Leyla in onun yanında. The bare subject pronoun o cannot replace the possessive form before yanında here.

Use it today

Write 60–80 words in one paragraph about a real or invented person. Introduce your relationship, add two visible details, support one character trait with an action and close with your impression. Check who each possessive form refers to and remove unnecessary repetitions of the name.
