Als introduces a single past event or period; wenn introduces repeated events or a condition.

The idea

Use wenn for future conditions and immer wenn for repeated past occasions. Being in the past is not enough to choose als: repetition changes the choice.

Watch out

A past tense does not automatically require als. Use als for a single past occasion or period, and wenn for repeated occasions, especially with immer wenn.

Try it yourself

  1. ___ ich gestern ankam, war es dunkel. (Als / Wenn)

    Show answer or example answer

    Als

Answer: “Als”. This refers to one specific past occasion, so als is appropriate.

  2. ___ ich morgen Zeit habe, komme ich. (Als / Wenn)

    Show answer or example answer

    Wenn

Answer: “Wenn”. This is a condition or future possibility, so wenn introduces the clause.

  3. Immer ___ es regnete, blieben wir drin. (als / wenn)

    Show answer or example answer

    wenn

Answer: “wenn”. The situation happened repeatedly; immer wenn marks that repetition.
