Bevor places the main-clause event before another event; nachdem places it after the subordinate-clause event.

The idea
Both introduce verb-final clauses. In a past narrative, the earlier nachdem event often takes Plusquamperfekt; in a present sequence, it can take Perfekt.
| Form / Muster | Beispiel / Gegensatz |
|---|---|
| bevor | zuerst lesen → danach schlafen |
| nachdem | zuerst essen → danach gehen |
| früheres Ereignis im Rückblick | nachdem er gegessen hatte |
Examples

Watch out
Separate the order of the clauses from the order of events. In Bevor ich schlafe, lese ich, reading happens before sleeping even though the sleeping clause appears first.
Try it yourself
___ ich schlafe, lese ich. (Bevor / Nachdem)
Show answer or example answer
Bevor
Reading happens before sleeping: lese ich is the earlier action, and bevor ich schlafe names the later event.
Nachdem er gegessen ___, ging er los. (hatte / wird)
Show answer or example answer
hatte
Answer: “hatte”. The event happened earlier than another past event; use hatte or war according to the Perfekt auxiliary.
Ich rufe an, bevor ich ___. (komme / ich komme)
Show answer or example answer
komme
Answer: “komme”. This is a subordinate clause, so the finite verb belongs at the end.
