The idea
Erfahren often introduces new information: erfahren, dass ... . Erleben places you inside an event: ein Abenteuer erleben. Both take haben in the Perfekt: erfahren and erlebt.

Read the whole construction
An email tells you a concert is cancelled: Ich habe von der Absage erfahren. Being there during a storm is different: Ich habe den Sturm erlebt. Learn the information frames von jemandem erfahren and erfahren, dass ... alongside the direct event pattern etwas erleben. The boundary is not absolute: Hilfe erfahren means receive help, which is itself an experience.

Watch out
Do not treat erfahren as a form of travelling with fahren: its Perfekt uses haben, not sein.
