Konjunktiv II describes imagined situations and their consequences, including things that did not happen.

The idea
For imagined present situations, use hätte or wäre as the main verb, or würde with an infinitive: Ich hätte Zeit; ich würde kommen. For imagined past situations, use hätte or wäre with a past participle: Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen.
| Form / Muster | Beispiel / Gegensatz |
|---|---|
| Gegenwart unreal | Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. |
| Vergangenheit unreal | Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen. |
| sein / haben | wäre / hätte |
Examples

Watch out
Do not use würde plus a participle for an unreal past event. Use hätte or wäre plus Partizip II: Wenn er gekommen wäre, hätten wir geredet.
Try it yourself
Wenn ich Zeit ___, würde ich kommen. (hätte / habe; unrealistisch)

hätte
Answer: “hätte”. The condition is imagined, so use Konjunktiv II; past conditions also need the participle.
Ich würde öfter ___. (schwimmen / schwimme)
Show answer or example answer
schwimmen
Answer: “schwimmen”. The finite verb is already present; this complementary verb stays in the infinitive.
Wenn er gekommen ___, hätten wir geredet. (wäre / würde)
Show answer or example answer
wäre
Kommen forms the Perfekt with sein. Its imagined past form therefore uses wäre with gekommen: wenn er gekommen wäre.
