The same Japanese word can sound different across regions. Learn to notice pitch without treating one speaker as a template.
The idea
Pitch accent describes patterns of relative high and low pitch, including where a fall occurs. Tokyo and Kyoto belong to different accent traditions, so a Tokyo dictionary pattern cannot be assumed for every region. Listen to a word together with its following particle: the pitch after the word can reveal whether a fall has occurred.
Examples
- 同じ言葉でも地域によって音の高さが違います。The pitch of the same word differs by region.
- 東京と京都の話し方を聞き比べます。I compare speech from Tokyo and Kyoto.
- 単語だけでなく助詞まで聞きます。I listen through the particle, not just the word.
- 音が下がる場所に注意します。I pay attention to where the pitch falls.
- 話す人や場面によっても発音は変わります。Pronunciation also changes with the speaker and situation.
- 違いに気づいたら文脈も確かめます。When I notice a difference, I check the context too.
Read-aloud uses a synthetic Japanese voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.
No Japanese device voice is available. You can still read the text and use the linked listening resources.
Watch out
A difference is not necessarily regional: individual speakers, emphasis and sentence intonation also affect pitch. A single recording cannot represent a whole region, and a synthetic voice may obscure the contrast.
