The first three examples keep the key and the drawer unchanged. Only the speaker’s stance changes: is this merely possible, or is it what they expect? You will choose belki, herhâlde or muhtemelen to match that stance.
The idea
Belki presents a possibility without necessarily favouring it. Herhâlde often gives the speaker’s assumption, while muhtemelen presents something as probable. The last two can overlap; muhtemelen also fits more formal writing, but is not restricted to it. These words do not assign fixed percentages or guarantee an outcome. A negative verb stays negative: Muhtemelen yetişemeyeceğiz predicts that we will probably fail to arrive in time. The linked suffix lesson explains the form -dir in çekmecededir; it does not cancel the uncertainty expressed here.
| Expression | Speaker’s stance |
|---|---|
| belki | One possibility; not necessarily the expected outcome |
| herhâlde | Often a personal assumption; may overlap with the next word |
| muhtemelen | A probable outcome; also suitable in more formal writing |

Watch out
Do not translate herhâlde as “definitely” just because it contains her. Write the probability word as one word, herhâlde, with â. The separate phrase her hâlde means “in any case”. Likewise, Belki yarın uğrarım leaves a visit open; it is not a promise.
Try it yourself
Offer only a possibility, without favouring it: ___ anahtar çekmecededir. Choose belki or muhtemelen.
Show answer or example answer
belki
belki: you are offering the drawer as one possibility and have not checked it. In this task, muhtemelen would express a stronger expectation than the stated intention.
The person always puts the key here. Complete a likely inference: ___ yine çekmecededir. Choose either suitable word: herhâlde or muhtemelen.

herhâlde / muhtemelen
herhâlde / muhtemelen: putting the key in the same place every day gives a reason to expect it there. Either fits this inference; the clue does not select a unique adverb.
The meeting has run over. Present missing the last bus as likely, not merely possible: ___ son otobüse yetişemeyeceğiz. Choose belki or muhtemelen.
Show answer or example answer
muhtemelen
muhtemelen: the overrun makes missing the bus likely. The negative yetişemeyeceğiz remains negative, so the sentence predicts failure to catch it, without claiming certainty.

Write two versions of a guess about a missing object: one with belki, one with herhâlde or muhtemelen. Add a clue that explains the stronger expectation, then write a probable negative outcome.
