You will choose how to present a necessary action: as a recommendation, a firm need or an obligation. The same situation can allow both expressions, with a different emphasis.

The idea

For advice, -meli is often suitable: Bence sen biraz dinlenmelisin recommends a rest. Zorunda presents an action as obligatory, often because circumstances or a duty leave no choice. But -meli is not always mild: in the Tuesday pair, kalkmalıyım also expresses a real need. Kalkmak zorundayım makes the lack of choice more explicit. • Son otobüs kalkıyor; şimdi gitmek zorundayız.The last bus is leaving; we have to go now.

Watch out

Do not confuse a negative recommendation with freedom to choose. Açmamalısın means you should not open it; açmak zorunda değilsin means you do not have to open it. The second does not forbid opening it.

Try it yourself

  1. Recommend a film without making it an obligation. Choose: Bence bu filmi ___. (izlemelisin / izlemek zorundasın)

    Show answer or example answer

    izlemelisin

izlemelisin: the speaker is recommending a film, not assigning a duty; izlemek zorundasın would turn that recommendation into pressure.

  2. The last bus is leaving. Explicitly stress that we have no choice. Choose: Son otobüs kalkıyor. Şimdi ___. (gitmeliyiz / gitmek zorundayız)

    Show answer or example answer

    gitmek zorundayız

gitmek zorundayız: the departing last bus is the practical constraint. This wording explicitly stresses that we have no choice; gitmeliyiz could also express a need to leave.

  3. Staying is an option: you do not have to go. Complete: İstersen kal. Gitmek ___. (zorundasın / zorunda değilsin)

    Show answer or example answer

    zorunda değilsin

zorunda değilsin: the invitation to stay leaves departure optional. A warning against leaving would change that message.

  4. Keep the surprise: warn the listener not to open the present now. Choose: Bu bir sürpriz. Hediyeyi şimdi ___. (açmamalısın / açmak zorunda değilsin)

    Show answer or example answer

    açmamalısın

açmamalısın: opening the present would spoil the surprise. This asks the listener to refrain; it does not merely remove an obligation.

Use it today

Write two versions of one obligation, using -meli and zorunda. Explain what changes in emphasis. Then write one warning and one sentence leaving the action optional.
