You will put an adjective in front of a noun, keep it unchanged, and add every ending to the noun alone.

The idea

The adjective stands directly before its noun and never changes: büyük ev, büyük evler, büyük evde. Plural, case and possessive endings go on the noun at the end of the phrase. The word bir (a) goes between the two: büyük bir ev; a strengthener such as çok goes before the adjective: çok büyük bir ev.

Examples

  • Bu güzel bir ev.This is a beautiful house.
  • Biz eski evde oturuyoruz. We live in the old house. The ending -de goes on the noun, evde; the adjective eski stays bare.
  • Büyük çocuklar parkta oynuyor. The big kids are playing in the park.
  • Ev büyük.The house is big. With the noun first this is a full sentence. The phrase "big house" is büyük ev.
  • büyük evlerbig housesOnly the noun takes -ler. The adjective stays büyük; büyükler evler is wrong.
  • Kırmızı elmalar tatlı.The red apples are sweet.
  • İyi bir arkadaşım var.I have a good friend.Bir stands between the adjective and the noun: iyi bir arkadaş.
  • Yeni evimiz çok güzel. Our new house is very nice. The adjective yeni stands right before evimiz; the adverb çok stands before the adjective it strengthens.

Watch out

Do not decorate the adjective as well: büyükler evler is wrong, the plural is only büyük evler. And with the noun first the phrase turns into a sentence: Ev büyük means "The house is big", while "a big house" is büyük ev.

Try it yourself

  1. Make the phrase "new houses" from yeni (new) and ev (house).

    Show answer or example answer

    yeni evler

yeni evler: the adjective yeni stays first and unchanged, and only the noun takes the plural -ler, because its last vowel e is a front vowel.

  2. Say "in the big house": put the ending on the noun only.

    Show answer or example answer

    büyük evde

büyük evde: the locative -de belongs to the noun ev, whose last vowel e is front; büyük gets nothing.

  3. Say "a good friend" with iyi (good), bir (a) and arkadaş (friend).

    Show answer or example answer

    iyi bir arkadaş

iyi bir arkadaş: bir sits between the adjective and the noun, so the order is adjective, bir, noun.

  4. Say the sentence "The book is new" with kitap (book) and yeni (new).

    Show answer or example answer

    Kitap yeni

Kitap yeni: with the noun first and the adjective after it, the two words form a sentence, "The book is new", with no extra verb needed.
