You may understand the Turkish you grew up hearing yet reach for another language with your own child. Practise the parent’s side of these original exchanges. A ninni is a lullaby; a masal is a tale that you tell or read. The examples contain no song lyrics.
The idea
Choose the form according to who acts and whether you are offering a choice. Okuyalım invites a shared activity; fırçala addresses one child directly. The singular imperative can sound ordinary and caring in a family: tone and context matter. Aferin praises, and naming the action makes the praise specific. In the invented hedgehog tale, bulmuş belongs to the familiar narrative use of the -miş past; it need not express doubt about the story.
Examples
- Bu akşam birlikte masal okuyalım.Let's read a story together this evening.
- Önce oyuncaklarını kutuya koy.First put your toys in the box.
- Bu resmi çok özenli boyamışsın.You've coloured this picture so carefully.
- Çocuk: Biraz daha oynayabilir miyim? Ebeveyn: Bugünlük bu kadar. Yarın devam ederiz.Child: Can I play a little longer? Parent: That’s enough for today. We’ll carry on tomorrow.
- Çocuk: Bana bir ninni söyler misin? Ebeveyn: Söylerim. Önce yorganını çekelim.Child: Will you sing me a lullaby? Parent: Yes. Let’s pull up your duvet first.
- Aferin, zor olsa da yeniden denedin.Well done, you tried again even though it was hard.
- Çocuk: Bir masal daha okuyalım mı? Ebeveyn: Son bir sayfa okuyalım, sonra uyku zamanı.Child: Shall we read one more story? Parent: Let’s read one last page, then it’s bedtime.
- Küçük bir kirpi bahçede mavi bir düğme bulmuş. Düğmeyi yuvasına götürmüş. Sabah olunca onu komşusuna göstermiş.A little hedgehog found a blue button in the garden. It took the button to its nest. When morning came, it showed it to its neighbour.

No Turkish device voice is available. You can still read the text.
Watch out
Do not turn every limit into a question just to sound gentle. Bir masal daha okuyalım mı? proposes another story and invites a response. Bugünlük bu kadar closes the activity for today. A child’s “yes” to the question is not a grammatical misunderstanding. Choose the meaning you intend.
Try it yourself
Complete with a shared suggestion using okumak: let’s read a story together.
Show answer or example answer
okuyalım
okuyalım: the parent joins the reading, so the first-person plural proposal fits. Oku would leave the reading to the child; the vowel-final stem takes y before the ending.
Use fırçalamak to give one child a direct instruction: brush your teeth.
Show answer or example answer
fırçala
fırçala: this is an instruction to one child, so the bare verb stem is enough. Fırçalayalım would instead include the speaker in the action.
Choose the expression that praises another attempt: aferin or iyi geceler.
Show answer or example answer
Aferin
Aferin: the next clause gives the reason for the praise—the child tried again despite difficulty. İyi geceler wishes someone a good night and does not praise the attempt.
Use the narrative -miş past of bulmak for the hedgehog’s discovery in a made-up tale.
Show answer or example answer
bulmuş
bulmuş: the hedgehog is the third-person subject of a fictional narrative. The rounded back vowel in bul- gives -muş; buldum would make the speaker, not the hedgehog, the finder.

Act out six bedtime turns with a partner. Include a shared suggestion, a direct instruction, praise for a specific action and a closing phrase. Then invent two more sentences about the hedgehog, keeping the same narrative tense.
