Parents and grandparents may ask about food or warmth in just a few words. Practise these everyday exchanges; tone and habits vary from family to family.

The idea

Match the reply to the kind of turn: Aç mısın? asks whether you are hungry now; Üşüdün mü? asks whether you got cold. A nudge such as Üstüne bir şey al asks for action, so Tamam, hırkamı alıyorum acknowledges it. Hadi can encourage someone to get started; its tone can also convey impatience. Keep the spaces in aç mısın and üşüdün mü.

Watch out

Do not treat Aç mısın? as another way to say Yemek yedin mi? Someone can have eaten and still be hungry. Tokum means “I am full”, not “I have eaten”.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose: açım / tokum. Aç mısın? — Hayır, ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    tokum

tokum: after “no”, being full explains why you do not want food; açım would say the opposite.

  2. Choose: üşüdüm / yedim. Üşüdün mü? — Evet, biraz ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    üşüdüm

üşüdüm: the question is about feeling cold, so this reply confirms that experience. Yedim would report eating.

  3. Choose: hırkamı / çorbamı. Üstüne bir şey al. — Tamam, ___ alıyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    hırkamı

hırkamı: a cardigan is something you can put on; çorbamı means “my soup” and does not fit this clothing reminder.

  4. Choose: yedim / açım. Yemek yedin mi? — Evet, ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    yedim

yedim: the question asks whether eating happened, and this confirms it. Açım describes hunger without answering that question.
