Selin is taking a ferry to read her own story at a bookshop, but she is tempted to turn back. A conversation with another passenger changes how she sees him and her own hesitation. This is original fiction.

The idea

Separate a character’s interpretation from an event the narrator establishes. Here, sanmıştı places the idea of being in a hurry in Selin’s mind; oysa introduces the detail that corrects it. Then compare what she does with her papers at the beginning and end: the repeated object helps you track a change in attitude.

Selin, Mert'in acelesi olduğunu sanmıştı.

Selin cevap vermedi. İçeri girip girmemekte hâlâ kararsızdı. Yine de iskelede ayrılmak yerine kitapçıya birlikte yürüdüler.

Selin kapının önünde bir an durdu. İçeriden kahkahalar geliyordu. Mert elini kapıya uzattı, sonra geri çekti. “Sıra sizdeydi, değil mi?” dedi. Selin çantasından kâğıtları çıkardı. “Evet,” dedi, “ama yalnız girmiyorum.” Kapıyı açıp içeri adım attı. Mert de arkasından geldi. Masanın ucunda iki boş sandalye vardı. Selin bu kez kâğıtları çantasına koymadı.

Watch out

In Sıra sizdeydi, değil mi?, the turn concerns entering the bookshop. Look back to the agreement on the ferry. It does not announce Selin’s turn to read aloud, and the story never shows how an audience receives her work.

Try it yourself

  1. What did Selin initially think about Mert? Choose: acelesi vardı / yolu bilmiyordu.

    Show answer or example answer

    acelesi vardı

acelesi vardı: Selin interprets the repeated glances at the watch as a sign of hurry. This is her initial assumption; Mert has not told her he is late.

  2. Why was Mert’s watch not showing the right time? Choose: durmuştu / hızlanmıştı.

    Show answer or example answer

    durmuştu

durmuştu: Mert says the watch no longer works and that he checks it out of habit. The narrator places the stoppage on the previous night, before the crossing.

  3. Who turned back at the bookshop door the previous week? Write the name.

    Show answer or example answer

    Mert

Mert: he describes approaching the bookshop the week before and leaving without speaking to anyone. Selin’s earlier action was to put her name on the reading list.

  4. Which interpretation of Selin does the final scene support? Choose: denemeye hazır / başarıdan emin.

    Show answer or example answer

    denemeye hazır

denemeye hazır: Selin enters and keeps her papers out instead of hiding them again. Those actions support a willingness to try; they do not show confidence that everyone will like her story.

Write four sentences in Turkish: Selin’s first impression, the detail that corrects it, the final change in her behaviour, and one thing the ending leaves unknown. Support the change with two actions from the story.
