Use deprem (earthquake) in a fictional account or a discussion of a report. The examples describe invented situations; focus on how endings identify the event and its role in a sentence.

The idea

The stem stays deprem: depremi, depreme, depremde, depremden, depremin, with plural depremler. Its final m does not soften; the last e gives front-vowel endings. Possessive forms can connect an event to a region: bölgenin son depremi means the region’s latest earthquake. Forms such as depremimiz need a context, for example an earthquake we experienced together, rather than literal ownership.

Watch out

Do not treat every depremi as an object. In bu depremi hatırlıyor, it is what someone remembers; in bölgenin son depremi, it is possessive. To say “during the region’s latest earthquake”, keep that possessive ending and add n before the locative: bölgenin son depreminde. Also distinguish depremde (during) from depremden sonra (after).

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with deprem: Everyone remembers this earthquake.

    Show answer or example answer

    depremi

depremi: bu identifies a particular event, and hatırlıyor takes it as a direct object. The accusative adds -i without changing the stem.

  2. Complete with deprem: The roads closed after the earthquake.

    Show answer or example answer

    depremden

depremden: sonra places the road closures after the event and requires the ablative on the noun. The final m allows d, so the ending is -den.

  3. Use the plural of deprem: Past earthquakes are being studied here.

    Show answer or example answer

    depremler

depremler: several past earthquakes are the subject of araştırılıyor. Add plural -ler; there is no accusative ending because they are not a direct object here.

  4. Complete with deprem: The bridge was damaged in the region’s latest earthquake.

    Show answer or example answer

    depreminde

depreminde: bölgenin establishes the possessive relation, so depremi must retain its -i. Adding n and -de locates the bridge damage during that event.

Use it today

Write three sentences about an invented report: one with a specified earthquake as object, one about several earthquakes, and one with bölgenin son depreminde. Explain each ending without drawing on personal experiences.
