Follow Cem from the bus stop to his classroom. This original story gives you a problem, a stranger’s suggestion and an ending to infer. Read once for the route, then again for the times.

The idea

Separate the travel problem from its final result. Otobüsü kaçırdım tells you that the bus left without the speaker; it does not tell you whether he was late for class. Follow önce (first) and sonra (then), and compare the arrival time with the start of class.

Benim adım Cem. Bu sabah evden biraz geç çıktım. Hemen durağa koştum. Otobüsün kapısı kapandı ve otobüs gitti. Durakta kaldım. Üniversitede dersim vardı. Bir sonraki otobüs yirmi dakika sonraydı. Başka bir yol var mıydı?

Durakta bir adam gazete okuyordu. Yanına gittim. “Affedersiniz, otobüsü kaçırdım. Üniversiteye başka nasıl gidebilirim?” diye sordum. Adam gazetesini kapattı. “Metroya binin.

Watch out

Do not read otobüsü kaçırdım as “I lost the bus” or automatically as “I was late for class”. The title names the missed journey; only the ending tells you what happened at the university.

Try it yourself

  1. What did Cem miss: the bus or the train? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    otobüsü / otobüsü kaçırdı

Otobüsü: the bus doors close and the bus leaves before Cem can board. The metro is his later solution, not the vehicle he misses.

  2. Who did Cem ask for help: a man or his teacher? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    bir adamdan / adamdan

Bir adamdan: the person at the stop is reading a newspaper and gives directions to the metro. Nothing in the story identifies him as the teacher.

  3. What means of transport did Cem use to get to the university? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    metroyla / metro ile

Metroyla or metro ile: he boards the metro and gets off at the third stop. He walks only the last part from that stop to the university.

  4. Was Cem late for class? Give a short answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

hayır / hayır, kalmadı / geç kalmadı

Hayır: he arrives at 8:50 and class starts at 9:00, leaving ten minutes. Missing the bus therefore does not make him late for class.
