Read once for the mix-up, then again for the small detail that resolves it. The six examples help you understand the scene; the questions ask you to use evidence from the story.

The idea

Follow the object’s identifying feature, not just the person holding it. In this story, sap means handle and ip means string. Connect the red string with the speaker who says he tied it, then use the final exchange to identify the owner.

Watch out

Aldı tells you that someone took something; it does not prove ownership. Also, benim means “my” from the current speaker’s point of view. Read each line with its speaker in mind.

Try it yourself

  1. How many black umbrellas were beside the door?

    Show answer or example answer

    iki / iki şemsiye

İki: the story places two black umbrellas beside the door. Their matching colour and size make the mistake plausible.

  2. What was on Deniz’s umbrella?

    Show answer or example answer

kırmızı ip / kırmızı bir ip

Kırmızı ip: the string is on the handle, and Deniz says he tied it there the day before. That detail identifies his umbrella.

  3. Did Elif take the umbrella by mistake or on purpose?

    Show answer or example answer

    yanlışlıkla

Yanlışlıkla: Elif notices the unfamiliar string, apologises and returns the umbrella. Her reaction shows that she did not mean to take someone else’s.

  4. Who took the umbrella with the red string in the end?

    Show answer or example answer

    Deniz / Deniz aldı

Deniz: he identifies the red string as his own addition. The two exchange umbrellas, and the ending says everyone takes their own, so the marked umbrella goes to him.
