Read once to find out whether Derya buys any fruit. Then read the dialogue again and track each price. The story and its prices are fictional.

The idea

To find the outcome, separate the asking price, the buyer’s offer and the accepted price. Here olur mu? asks whether a proposed price is acceptable; it does not report a completed purchase. Read the reply and the later payment together.

Derya bir an düşündü. “Tamam, iki kilo için yetmiş lira,” dedi.

Satıcı elmaları dikkatle tarttı. Derya elmaları kendi çantasına koydu ve satıcıya yüz lira verdi. Satıcı para üstünü uzattı. Derya parayı saydı; doğruydu. Armut almadı. Satıcıya teşekkür etti. Sonra çantasını eve götürdü. Evde iki elmayı yıkadı. Birini yedi, diğerini kardeşine verdi.

Watch out

Do not take başını salladı alone as agreement: moving the head can be ambiguous in writing. The seller immediately says Hayır, so the sixty-lira offer is refused.

Try it yourself

  1. Which fruit did Derya buy? Choose elma (apple) or armut (pear).

    Show answer or example answer

    elma

elma: she puts apples in her bag, and the story explicitly says she buys no pears. Seeing both fruits does not mean buying both.

  2. How much did two kilos of apples cost before bargaining?

    Show answer or example answer

    seksen lira / seksen / 80 lira / 80

seksen lira: the seller first quotes forty per kilo and eighty for two. This question asks for the price before the conversation changes it.

  3. How much did Derya pay for two kilos of apples?

    Show answer or example answer

    yetmiş lira / yetmiş / 70 lira / 70

yetmiş lira: she accepts the seller’s counteroffer. Sixty was her rejected proposal; the hundred she hands over includes money to be returned.

  4. Derya handed over one hundred lira. How much change did she receive?

    Show answer or example answer

    otuz lira / otuz / 30 lira / 30

otuz lira: she gives one hundred for a seventy-lira purchase, leaving thirty in change. The story says she counts it and it is correct.
