If you read Arabic, some Turkish words already look familiar. Use that recognition to make a first guess, then check the modern Turkish meaning and the form needed in the sentence.

The idea

Compare Arabic كتاب with kitap (book) and جواب with cevap (answer). Both Turkish words end in the sound p, not b; in cevap, notice c and v too. These pairs are clues, not a letter-by-letter conversion rule. Once recognised, a word takes Turkish endings: kitaplar, kitabı. Learn each borrowed word with its Turkish spelling, meaning and an inflected form.

Watch out

Arabic مسافر means a traveller, but everyday Turkish misafir means a guest. A person visiting your home need not be travelling. For a traveller or passenger, yolcu is the useful Turkish word; a shared origin does not guarantee a shared meaning.

Try it yourself

  1. Which Turkish word corresponds to Arabic جواب: kitap or cevap? Write one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    cevap

cevap: the clue جواب points to an answer. Turkish writes the initial sound with c, the middle consonant with v and the final sound with p.

  2. Complete “I read this book yesterday.” Use the accusative of kitap and write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    kitabı

kitabı: bu identifies the particular book being read, so the object needs the accusative. Before -ı, the final p changes to b.

  3. We are welcoming a guest at home. Choose misafir or yolcu and fill the blank.

    Show answer or example answer

    misafir

misafir: the person is being welcomed at home as a guest. The sentence describes hospitality, not a journey, so the Arabic meaning of مسافر would mislead you.

  4. Write the ordinary modern Turkish plural of kitap. No numeral precedes it.

    Show answer or example answer

    kitaplar

kitaplar: several books are meant, with no numeral before the noun. The last vowel a selects -lar; the consonant-initial ending leaves p unchanged.
