An object can fall, a person can lose their balance, and a temperature can go down. Düşmek describes all three. Start with the forms table, then notice what falls and where it lands in each example.
The idea
The stem düş- keeps its ş: düşüyorum, düştüm, düşeceğim, düşerim. The past has t after voiceless ş; in the future, the ending’s k becomes ğ before the first-person vowel. For a fall, the source takes the ablative (koltuktan) and the destination takes the dative (yere). A temperature also falls to a value: beş dereceye düştü.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | düşüyorum | düştüm | düşeceğim | düşerim |
| sen | düşüyorsun | düştün | düşeceksin | düşersin |
| o | düşüyor | düştü | düşecek | düşer |
| biz | düşüyoruz | düştük | düşeceğiz | düşeriz |
| siz | düşüyorsunuz | düştünüz | düşeceksiniz | düşersiniz |
| onlar | düşüyorlar | düştüler | düşecekler | düşerler |

Watch out
In the sense “fall”, the thing falling is the subject: Bardak düştü. If you dropped it, use Bardağı düşürdüm: düşürmek makes the glass the object. This can be accidental; the form does not mean you did it deliberately. Also learn the aorist as düşer, not düşür.
Try it yourself
Complete in the past: I fell on the ice yesterday.
Show answer or example answer
düştüm
düştüm: dün places the fall yesterday, and ben identifies the speaker as the person who fell. The past ending is -tü- after ş, followed by first-person -m.
Complete in the future: Hold me, or I will fall!

düşeceğim
düşeceğim: the speaker predicts a fall if nobody holds them. The requested future gives düşecek-; adding the first-person ending changes its final k to ğ.
Use the aorist for what the leaves do in autumn.

düşer
düşer: the leaves fall repeatedly in autumn, so the aorist fits. This verb uses -er. The non-human plural subject normally takes a singular verb here.
Choose the verb and use the past: I accidentally dropped the glass onto the floor.

düşürdüm
düşürdüm: bardağı is the object, while the speaker caused the fall. Yanlışlıkla tells us it was accidental. Düştüm would say that the speaker fell.
