Report a source’s words with sei, habe or komme: Lena sagt, sie sei müde.

The idea

For earlier events use habe/sei plus participle: sie habe bezahlt; sie sei abgereist.

Patterns to compare
FeatureForm
Presenter ist → er sei; er hat → er habe
Earlier event with habener hat bezahlt → er habe bezahlt
Earlier event with seiner ist abgereist → er sei abgereist
sein in the pluralsie sind → sie seien

Look more closely

Adjust pronouns to the speaker. If a Konjunktiv I form matches indicative, Konjunktiv II can clarify the report.

Omar says: Ich habe bezahlt. From another person’s viewpoint, ich becomes er: Omar sagt, er habe bezahlt. The payment is earlier than the report, so habe combines with bezahlt. For his present state, Ich bin bereit instead becomes er sei bereit.
