Participle I usually presents an ongoing active action: ein wartender Gast.

The idea
Add adjective endings before a noun: die wartenden Gäste, ein repariertes Rad.
| Feature | Form |
|---|---|
| Participle I | warten → wartend → ein wartender Gast |
| Participle II: result | reparieren → repariert → ein repariertes Rad |
| Participle II: completed active action | ankommen → angekommen → der angekommene Zug |
| Expanded modifier | die gestern reparierte Lampe |
Review adjective endings before attaching them to participles. German adjective endings: a practical starting point
Look more closely
Expand the phrase to check meaning: die gestern reparierte Lampe → die Lampe, die gestern repariert wurde.
For warten, form Participle I by adding d: warten → wartend. For ein Gast in nominative, add -er: ein wartender Gast. A completed repair instead uses the existing Participle II repariert: ein repariertes Rad. Put details before the participle: die gestern reparierte Lampe.
