券 appears on tickets, vouchers and certificates. Learn it in complete words you might see at a station, restaurant or event.

The idea

In 食券, the final sound of 食 joins the following k as a small っ.

Watch out

券 is not normally used alone as the everyday word for a ticket. 切符 and チケット are also common, while 食券 specifically means a meal voucher. Do not confuse 券 with the similar-looking 巻.

Try it yourself

  1. Write the reading of 入場券 in hiragana.

The small っ marks a pause before けん; do not read it しょくけん.
