Loanwords can sound different from their source words. Listen for the Japanese rhythm.
The idea
Japanese generally places a vowel after a consonant: bus becomes バス and test becomes テスト. Count each mora evenly: バ・ス has two; コ・ー・ヒ・ー has four. The long vowel mark ー and small ッ each take a mora.
| Loanword | Morae |
|---|---|
| バス | バ・ス |
| テスト | テ・ス・ト |
| ホテル | ホ・テ・ル |
| コーヒー | コ・ー・ヒ・ー |
| ベッド | ベ・ッ・ド |
Examples
- バスで学校へ行きます。I go to school by bus.
- テストは明日です。The test is tomorrow.
- 新しいホテルに泊まります。I will stay at a new hotel.
- コーヒーを一杯飲みます。I drink a cup of coffee.
- パンを二つ買います。I buy two bread rolls.
- ベッドで本を読みます。I read a book in bed.

Watch out
Do not assume the original pronunciation or spelling predicts every Japanese form. A small ッ marks a pause before a consonant; ー lengthens the preceding vowel.
