Notice how katakana words fit Japanese timing.

The idea

Many loanwords adapt to Japanese sound patterns: バス has two morae, バ・ス, and ホテル has three, ホ・テ・ル. In コーヒー, each ー extends the previous vowel for another mora. ス includes the vowel う, although that vowel may be voiceless and hard to hear in natural speech.

Watch out

Do not assume that the source-language spelling predicts every Japanese vowel or its length. The small ッ is not an extra full vowel.
