Some loanwords use small vowels to represent sound combinations beyond the basic kana chart.

The idea

Combine フ with small ァ, ィ, ェ or ォ in ファミリー, フィルム, フェリー and フォーク. ティ in パーティー and ディ in ディナー also use a small ィ. The long mark ー extends the preceding vowel.

Watch out

A full-sized vowel is a separate kana: テイ is not the spelling ティ. Katakana approximates sounds within Japanese; pronunciation and established spelling do not necessarily match a source language exactly.
