This B1 lesson helps you follow who does what when words get shortened. All dialogue is original. No recording is attached; the table gives approximate speech cues, and the examples keep standard spelling.

The idea

In casual speech, gidiyorum may sound like gidiyom, geliyorum like geliyom, and bekliyorsun like bekliyosun. Recover the whole verb, including its person: the final m in the first two cues still points to the speaker. Unstressed bir can sound like bi: bi dakika corresponds to bir dakika. These are possible pronunciations, not compulsory changes or new written forms. Şey is different: it is a word, not a contraction. In bir şey it means “something”; before a pause, it can work like “um”.

Ece: Şey, anahtar masada kaldı.

Mert: Ben mutfağa gidiyorum.

Ece: Bir dakika bekler misin? Sana bir şey soracağım.

Mert: Tamam, dinliyorum.

Examples

  • Ben mutfağa gidiyorum.I am going to the kitchen.
  • Sen burada bekliyorsun. You are waiting here.
  • Bir dakika bekler misin?Could you wait a minute?
  • Ben de geliyorum.I am coming too.
  • Şey, anahtar masada kaldı.Um, the key was left on the table.
  • Sana bir şey soracağım.I am going to ask you something.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not turn gidiyom into gidiyor: that would change “I am going” into “he/she is going”. Do not automatically translate every şey as a thing, either: in Şey, anahtar masada kaldı, the speaker hesitates before explaining about the key. Write bir şey as two words even when it sounds compressed.

Try it yourself

  1. Write gidiyom in standard spelling.

    Show answer or example answer

    gidiyorum

gidiyorum: the shortened form still ends in m, so it refers to the speaker. Restoring only gidiyor would lose that information.

  2. Write bi dakika in standard spelling.

    Show answer or example answer

    bir dakika

bir dakika: this request asks for a moment. The short bi comes from bir; keep the two words separate in writing.

  3. Someone says Geliyom. Which pronoun matches the verb: ben or o?

    Show answer or example answer

    ben

ben: in geliyom, the last m identifies the person who is speaking, even without an explicit pronoun. The full verb is geliyorum.

  4. In Şey, anahtar masada kaldı, does şey express a hesitation (duraksama) or name an object (nesne)? Write the matching Turkish label.

    Show answer or example answer

    duraksama

duraksama: here şey holds a pause before a complete statement about the key. It does not name another object in the sentence.

Cover the standard column and restore each speech cue. Read the original exchange, identify the speaker of each verb, then say it slowly and conversationally. Keep the standard spelling in your notes.
