You will ask the time, say whole and half hours, and tell when something starts.
The idea
Ask the time now with Saat kaç? and answer with Saat plus the number: Saat üç. Half past is the hour that has already begun plus buçuk: üç buçuk is 3:30. To say when something happens, ask Saat kaçta? and put the locative on the last word of the time: saat üçte, saat üç buçukta.
| Number | On the hour | At half past |
|---|---|---|
| bir | birde | bir buçukta |
| iki | ikide | iki buçukta |
| üç | üçte | üç buçukta |
| dört | dörtte | dört buçukta |
| beş | beşte | beş buçukta |
| altı | altıda | altı buçukta |
| yedi | yedide | yedi buçukta |
| sekiz | sekizde | sekiz buçukta |
| dokuz | dokuzda | dokuz buçukta |
| on | onda | on buçukta |

Watch out
Do not leave the locative off the time of an event: Film saat sekiz başlıyor is wrong, say Film saat sekizde başlıyor. And ask Saat kaçta? for when something happens; Saat kaç? only asks what the clock says now.
Try it yourself
Fill the blank: At what time does the film start?
Show answer or example answer
kaçta
kaçta: you are asking when an event happens, so kaç takes the locative; its last vowel a is back and ç is voiceless, so the suffix is -ta.
Write 3:30 after saat: half past three.
Show answer or example answer
üç buçuk
üç buçuk: you name the hour that has begun, three, and add buçuk for the extra half.
Add the suffix: Breakfast is ready at seven.
Show answer or example answer
yedide
yedide: yedi ends in a vowel and its last vowel i is front, so the suffix is -de.
The class starts at 9:30: write the time with its suffix.
Show answer or example answer
dokuz buçukta
dokuz buçukta: the locative goes on the last word, buçuk; its k is voiceless and its vowel u is back, so the suffix is -ta.
