These original practice items ask you to connect two ideas. They are not official exam questions. Choose only from the options shown; where two fit, either answer is accepted.
The idea
Before looking at the options, decide what the second clause does. A reason points to çünkü; a result points to bu yüzden. For contrast, test ama or ancak against both clauses. When the second clause corrects an expectation, consider oysa. Then reread the complete sentence: a familiar word alone is not enough.
Examples
- Bugün yollar kapalı çünkü kar yağıyor. The roads are closed today because it is snowing.
- Bugün otobüs gelmedi, bu yüzden yürüdük.The bus did not come today, so we walked.
- Bugün hava soğuk ama güneş parlıyor. It is cold today, but the sun is shining.
- Bu oda geniş ancak hiç güneş almıyor. This room is spacious, but it gets no sunlight at all.
- Herkes toplantıyı yarın sanıyordu, oysa toplantı bugün.Everyone thought the meeting was tomorrow, but it is actually today.
- Kapıyı açamadık çünkü anahtar yanımızda değildi. We could not open the door because we did not have the key with us.

Watch out
Do not choose a connector just because the two events are related. Swapping cause and result changes the answer. Also, ama and ancak can both fit a contrast: do not invent a difference merely to force one answer.
Try it yourself
Choose one of the connectors in brackets. Işık yanmıyor ___ ampul bozuk. (çünkü / bu yüzden / oysa)
Show answer or example answer
çünkü
çünkü: the broken bulb explains why the light is off. The light being off does not cause the bulb to break.
Choose one of the connectors in brackets. Ampul bozuk, ___ ışık yanmıyor. (çünkü / bu yüzden / ancak)
Show answer or example answer
bu yüzden
bu yüzden: the broken bulb comes first; the light being off is its result. Using çünkü would reverse that explanation.
Choose one of the connectors in brackets. Bu masa ucuz ___ mutfağa sığmıyor. (ama / ancak / çünkü)
Show answer or example answer
ama / ancak
ama / ancak: the low price is attractive, but the table does not fit in the kitchen. Either connector expresses this drawback; its size does not explain its price.
Choose one of the connectors in brackets. Herkes salonu boş sanıyordu, ___ içeride bir toplantı vardı. (oysa / çünkü / bu yüzden)
Show answer or example answer
oysa
oysa: people expected an empty room, but the meeting shows that this belief was wrong. The second clause corrects the expectation rather than giving its cause.
